Discussion Questions For Book Clubs

Thank you for selecting my novel for your book club . What a thrill it is for me to know that there are readers out there who want to discuss House of Wives. Here are some questions you might want to consider. They are in no particular order.
  • One of the main themes of the book is: “Are you who you think you are or are you who the world wants you to be?”
  • Could the story still exist if Emanuel were not in it? What would that look like?
  • Is the story more compelling because it is inspired by real events and real people? Would you be willing to accept the things that happened in the narrative if it was entirely fictional? For example the antagonism between the two women, the conditions that gave rise to Semah and Pearl being thrown together in one house?
  • What did you learn about India, Hong Kong, the opium trade and the lives of 19th century women that you did not know before reading the book?
  • This book has been slotted into the Historical Fiction genre. Is it primarily a literary work or is it a commercial book? That is to say, how did you find the prose? Did the writing delight you? Challenge you? Irritate you? And the characters were they compelling? Boring? Unbelievable? Realistic?
  • How does this book compare with others that your club selected in the past? Did you read HoW in one sitting? Was it “un-put down-able” or was it a struggle to get through?
  • Would you recommend HoW to your library? Your local high school or college?
